Certified Peer Support Specialist

Peer Support services emphasize personal safety, self-worth, confidence, and growth, connection to the community, boundary setting, planning, self-advocacy, personal fulfillment, and development of social supports, the helper principle, and effective communication skills. Services emphasize the acquisition, development, and expansion of rehabilitative skills needed to move forward in recovery. Peer Support Specialists will identify themselves as a person who has been diagnosed with an SPMI or as a recovering addict based on the Federal definitions.

Examples of specific interventions include:

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a High School diploma or a GED

  • North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist credential

  • Meet the provider qualification policies, procedures, and standards established by DMA

  • Meet the provider qualification policies, procedures, and standards established by the Division of Mental Health/Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services (DMH/DD/SAS)

  • Approved as a provider in the PIHP provider network

  • Fulfill the requirements of 10A NCAC 27G

  • Persons eligible to provide this service will achieve certification in the State of North Carolina as a Peer Support Specialist by satisfactorily completing the 40-hour state-approved training

  • Must receive supervision from a Qualified Professional if the person is not themselves a Qualified Professional (paraprofessionals)

Qualified Professional

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive functional assessments and reassessments, which integrate symptomatology and treatment recommendations into plans of care

  • Develop appropriate plans of care or person-centered plans to assist clients with identified outcomes and objectives. Ensure short-term and long-term intensive service plan implementation, including authorization of specific in-home and community services to meet the identified client needs

  • Resolution of client-directed concerns to ensure quality service delivery

  • Collaboration and coordination were made with other providers of client services

  • Discharge, terminate, or transfer as needed to ensure optimum care

  • Adherence to all agency policies, including ethics, service regulations, and professional practices

  • Collateral contact made with therapists and other personnel for case consultation, service plan development, and provider oversight

  • Maintenance of client records

  • Maintenance of community or facility-based Individualized Supervision Plans

  • Coordination of services with other community service providers, including community mental health and disability service organizations

  • Attend all trainings and in-services as required for the position

  • All other duties as assigned per Service Specific Definitions

  • Knowledge of local in-home and community options and resources for children, adolescents, seniors, or adults with mental health diagnoses and their caregivers

  • Direct functional assessment, service planning,g and implementation experience

  • Experience monitoring client service plan implementation regarding service delivery quality, timeliness, and appropriateness

  • Ability to function in a multi-lingual, multi-cultural environment, including providing service with the use of interpreters

  • Ability to travel to and from the client’s home that may not be ADA accessible

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Experience in crisis intervention

  • Ability to maintain paper and electronic records and files of clients and services provided

  • Experience in using computers and software, including Microsoft Office products

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, families, caregivers, diverse service provider networks, medical personnel, and agency staff

  • Ability to work independently in the field and effectively as a part of a team, and follow the agency’s values

  • Ability to work under pressure, within short timelines, to implement service plans

  • Ability to supervise 5-8 Certified Peer Support Staff

  • Must be willing to see clients at home or in the community

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and insurance

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum education requirements (Bachelor's in non-human services field and 4 years of MH/DD/SA experience; Bachelor's in human services field and 2 years of MH/DD/SA experience; or Master's in human services field and 1 year of MH/DD/SA experience)

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license

  • Use of a reliable motor vehicle

  • Proof of mandatory state motor vehicle insurance

  • Ability to pass a criminal background check

  • Degree verification

  • Understanding of systemic barriers and social determinants of health

Licensed Professional

Responsibilities

  • Complete clinical assessment, treatment planning, and/or arranging of appropriate therapeutic programs.

  • Provide counseling services based on mental health, psychological, and human development theories, principles, and techniques to youth, adults, and groups.

  • Deliver psychoeducation to consumers, providing information regarding mental health, emotional disorders, substance use, co-occurring disorders, and/or behavioral health.

  • Regularly analyze and assess consumer progress through accepted objective and subjective measures; maintain up-to-date progress notes.

  • Creates appropriate therapeutic interventions for both individuals and/or groups of consumers.

  • Review and evaluate recent psychosocial health research and interpret it to professionals and consumers.

  • Provide de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention as necessary.

  • Coordinate with clinical, health education, community health, and other staff members in the provision of services to consumers. Provide referrals for services needed.

  • Creates discharge plans and acts as liaison to referral sources and supports of continuation of care as needed.

  • Attend all trainings and supervisions as required.

  • Maintains all clinical documentation in accordance with regulatory and accrediting standards.

  • Adhere to all agency policies as well as state and federal laws.

  • Maintain consumer confidentiality and perform duties at the highest ethical and professional standards.

  • Assume other responsibilities as directed.

  • Experience in diagnosing, treating, and evaluating the effectiveness of treatment of children or adults with mental health or substance abuse disorders.

  • Direct service experience including face-to-face treatment and interventions for individuals with a primary mental health or substance use diagnosis.

  • Ability to diagnose according to the standards of the DSM-5-TR.

  • Knowledge of several clinical modalities, including the provision of trauma-informed care frameworks.

  • Willingness to provide services with empathy while upholding the dignity and autonomy of our consumers.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Experience in using computers and software, including Microsoft Office products.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, families, caregivers, diverse service provider networks, medical personnel, and agency staff.

  • Ability to work independently in the field and effectively as a part of a team, and follow the agency’s values.

  • Ability to work under pressure, within short timelines to implement service plans.

  • Must be able to provide in-person services in the Henderson office twice per week, may need to transport clients in a personal vehicle.

  • Must be willing to see clients at home or in the community occasionally.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and insurance.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher from an accredited university in the behavioral and mental health field.

  • NC Licensed Mental Health Professional (social worker, mental health counselor, marriage and family therapist, doctoral level psychologist) in good standing. Provisionally licensed individuals will be considered.
